India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has introduced the Self Help Group (SHG) Savings Account to promote financial inclusion and support women-led SHGs in rural India. This account is tailored to be a zero balance, zero charges account, making it affordable and easily accessible. It offers features like no minimum initial deposit, no Monthly Average Balance (MAB) requirement, and a maximum balance limit of Rs 2,00,000.
The SHG Savings Account also provides quarterly interest pay-outs based on applicable savings rates, along with no charges for cash deposits and withdrawals. Customers can receive one free physical account statement per month, and there are no charges for account closure or QR card issuance. R Viswesvaran, the MD and CEO of IPPB, emphasized that this initiative aims to empower women-led SHGs with a reliable and cost-effective banking solution.
IPPB’s goal is to simplify banking for all Indians and ensure inclusivity. By leveraging a combination of doorstep banking services and digital infrastructure, the bank intends to enhance SHGs’ participation in the formal financial system and drive sustainable economic growth. Self Help Groups play a crucial role in rural economic development in India, aligning with government initiatives like the National Rural Livelihoods Mission and programs supported by NABARD.
IPPB plans to expand financial access for SHGs by utilizing the extensive Postal Network of the Department of Posts and its digital capabilities. The integration of doorstep banking services and digital on-boarding, supported by Postmen and Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS), will further strengthen financial inclusion efforts.
