India has delivered relief materials, including food items and family tents, to Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority to assist communities affected by severe floods in Nuristan. The Ministry of External Affairs expressed solidarity with the Afghan people during this challenging period. The floods in Parun city of Nuristan have resulted in at least 20 fatalities and over 80 injuries, as per local media reports.
The Taliban authorities stated that more than 100 individuals are still missing following the floods in Parun and neighboring areas. The National Disaster Management Authority, under Taliban administration, reported significant casualties and damage in Parun and other parts of Nuristan due to heavy floods. Specialized teams have been deployed to assess the situation, locate missing persons, and evaluate the extent of the destruction.
Residences, farmlands, and businesses have suffered damage or destruction from the floods, leading to substantial financial losses. The head of information and publications at the National Disaster Management Authority, Hafiz Mohammad Yousuf Hamad, mentioned ongoing search and rescue operations in flood-affected regions. As search efforts continue, the death toll may increase, with concerns rising due to over 100 people still unaccounted for.
The recent floods in Nuristan followed intense rainfall, particularly affecting mountainous regions with limited accessibility. Afghanistan faces heightened vulnerability to various extreme weather events, such as landslides, droughts, and floods.
