India has rejected the recent award issued by the “illegally constituted” Court of Arbitration (CoA) under the Indus Waters Treaty. The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson stated that India considers the award null and void, emphasizing that it has never acknowledged the legitimacy of the CoA.
The Indus Waters Treaty, signed between India and Pakistan in 1960, governs the use of the Indus system rivers. Following a terrorist attack last year, India suspended its obligations under the treaty until Pakistan renounces support for cross-border terrorism.
India maintains that it is not bound by the treaty while it is in abeyance and asserts its right to act as a sovereign nation. The Ministry of External Affairs has previously criticized the CoA for its decisions on hydroelectric projects in Jammu and Kashmir, labeling them as illegal and void.
Pakistan’s use of arbitration mechanisms has been condemned by India as an attempt to evade accountability for its involvement in terrorism. India views these actions as part of Pakistan’s history of manipulating international forums.
