India has reiterated to Pakistan that the Indus Water Treaty will stay suspended as long as Islamabad continues to support cross-border terrorism. India’s Permanent Representative, P. Harish, emphasized this stance during a Security Council meeting, highlighting that cooperation cannot thrive amid state-sponsored terrorism. The suspension of the 1960 Indus Water Treaty followed a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, where 24 people lost their lives.

Pakistan’s mention of the Indus Water Treaty and Kashmir at a recent debate drew a firm response from India. Harish pointed out Pakistan’s unilateral actions regarding the treaty amid the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. Prime Minister Narendra Modi justified the treaty’s suspension by stating, “Water and blood also cannot flow together.”

Addressing Pakistan’s claims on Jammu and Kashmir, Harish reaffirmed that the region is an integral part of India. He criticized Pakistan for disregarding the legal reality and accused it of aggression and illegal occupation in the area. The Security Council’s 1948 resolution called for Pakistan to withdraw its troops from Jammu and Kashmir and refrain from supporting intrusions or armed activities in the region.

Pakistan’s handling of protests in the occupied territory has raised concerns, with over 30 Kashmiris losing their lives due to security forces’ actions. In a recent incident in Tararkhal, six Kashmiris were killed by Pakistani security forces. Harish urged Pakistan to focus on internal issues rather than blaming India, emphasizing the need for internal reforms.
