India has witnessed significant infrastructure growth in sectors like civil aviation, power, telecom, highways, railways, and ports, as per the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation’s quarterly update. The civil aviation sector showed robust performance in FY2026-27, with 7.1 crore passenger traffic and 7.3 lakh tonnes of cargo handled, marking a 10.6% increase from the previous year.
In the power sector, projections indicate a substantial rise in energy storage capacity for Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to 94 GW and 80 GW, respectively, by 2035-36. This growth underscores India’s focus on grid reliability and renewable energy integration.
Telecom infrastructure expanded by 3.7% year-on-year, with 8.55 lakh towers and 32.25 lakh Base Transceiver Stations (BTS), while tele-density reached 93.26% in FY 2025-26, enhancing digital connectivity. The Road Transport and Highways sector also saw progress, with electronic toll collection transactions increasing by 39.7% year-on-year to Rs 88 crore in FY 2026-27.
Railways improved freight efficiency and network capacity, with average freight load per wagon rising to about 68 tonnes and the rail network expanding to over 1.37 lakh track kilometers in 2024-25. The Ports, Shipping, and Waterways sector experienced growth, with the fleet expanding to 1,592 vessels in 2025 and sea-borne trade almost doubling from 76 million tonnes in 2015 to 145 million tonnes in 2023.
The expansion of navigable waterways to 29,151.9 kms in FY2024-25 has strengthened multimodal logistics and connectivity. The quarterly update of the PAIMANA ‘Performance Monitoring Dashboard’ aims to enhance transparency, efficiency, and accountability in infrastructure monitoring, supporting evidence-based policymaking for sustainable development.
