India is set to conduct its first fully digital Census in 2027, utilizing mobile-based data collection for accurate and comprehensive information crucial for policymaking and development. The upcoming Census will introduce innovative features like real-time monitoring via the Census Management & Monitoring System portal, self-enumeration options, and extensive use of geo-referenced areas, as per an official fact-sheet.

The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs has approved the inclusion of caste enumeration in the Census, a departure from previous exercises that focused solely on Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) until 2011. The initiative is supported by an allocated budget of Rs. 11,718.24 crore and enhanced data security measures.

Scheduled in a structured two-phase format, Census 2027 aims to ensure thorough and systematic data collection nationwide. With secure Critical Information Infrastructure (CII)-designated data centers and a substantial workforce, the Census is poised to provide reliable data crucial for targeted policymaking and inclusive governance.

The Census plays a vital role in assessing population trends and facilitating effective planning in critical sectors like food, water, energy, and infrastructure. By offering detailed insights at the grassroots level, it aids in the precise delivery of government programs and optimal resource distribution.

The forthcoming Census 2027, the eighth since independence, is anticipated to enhance the existing framework by offering updated and detailed information. This will enable more accurate, data-driven planning to tackle evolving challenges in a rapidly changing socio-economic environment, as highlighted in the official statement.

Census, a comprehensive data collection process covering demographic, social, cultural, and economic aspects, serves as a valuable resource for planners, administrators, researchers, and various data users. The digital integration, robust data security, and process enhancements in Census 2027 mark a significant advancement towards evidence-based policymaking on a global scale.
