India is set to boost its compute capacity by adding 20,000 GPUs to the existing 38,000, as announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. This move signifies the advancement of India’s AI strategy, focusing on expanding compute infrastructure and ensuring responsible AI deployment. The minister emphasized the importance of responsible AI development and its widespread implementation across various sectors like healthcare and education to benefit all.
At the ‘India AI Impact Summit 2026’, Minister Vaishnaw expressed optimism about investment opportunities, foreseeing potential investments worth over $200 billion in the next two years. He highlighted the support of venture capital firms for deep-tech startups, with investments spanning all layers of the AI stack. Additionally, there is a commitment from venture capital firms and other stakeholders to fund significant solutions and key applications.
In terms of energy capacity, Minister Vaishnaw pointed out that India stands out globally with more than 50% of its power generation coming from clean sources, currently at around 51%. This clean energy advantage provides a significant edge for the country. Discussing India’s sovereign AI models, the minister mentioned the testing and evaluation of various models against multiple criteria at the Summit.
The minister stressed the importance of a techno-legal approach to ensure the ethical use of AI while mitigating negative impacts. He reiterated India’s dedication to the Semiconductor Mission, with a specific focus on design in Semiconductor 2.0. Minister Vaishnaw predicted the emergence of at least 50 deep-tech startups from India in the near future, driven by ongoing innovation and development initiatives.
During the Summit’s first day, more than 2.5 lakh students pledged to utilize AI for responsible innovation, aiming for recognition by the Guinness World Records for this initiative.
