India is all set to launch its first hydrogen train, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to flag off the inaugural journey from Jind, Haryana, on July 17. This milestone marks a significant moment in the country’s railway history, emphasizing a shift towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation. The state-of-the-art Hydrogen train is notable for its zero carbon emissions and operation on clean hydrogen fuel, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct.
The hydrogen-powered train will run between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana, serving as a pilot project that signifies a new phase in India’s transition towards green energy. Equipped with ten coaches and a 1200 kW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system, this train is recognized for its environmental friendliness, being the world’s most powerful hydrogen train with 3200 horsepower.
This initiative reflects India’s commitment to achieving cleaner and greener rail journeys, aligning with the nation’s goals of environmentally sustainable transportation and zero-carbon emissions. Additionally, the launch of the indigenous Hydrogen train supports the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Mission, showcasing self-reliance in design, development, and infrastructure, including hydrogen storage and refueling facilities in Jind.
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, highlighted the significance of this milestone, noting that India now joins a select group of nations like Germany, Japan, China, and the United States in exploring hydrogen fuel cell technology for sustainable rail operations. The inaugural Hydrogen train, capable of accommodating 2,600 passengers, is poised to revolutionize Indian Railways’ operations, enhance passenger travel experiences, and contribute to the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat.’
