The India U17 women’s team wrapped up their tour of Russia with a 0-3 loss in the final friendly match at the Matsesta Football Centre in Sochi. Russia scored in the 46th minute through Valeria Menyailova, followed by Polina Frolova’s goal in the 80th minute. Anna Bykhanova netted the third goal in stoppage time, sealing the victory.
Coached by Italian Pamela Conti, the Young Tigresses used the three-match series as part of their preparations for the upcoming AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup China 2026. Despite earlier defeats of 0-4 and 0-3, the matches provided valuable experience against a physically stronger Russian side.
India’s defense notably improved during the matches, showing better organization and discipline. The team effectively restricted Russian forwards and forced them to resort to long-range attempts. However, India struggled in the attacking third, failing to capitalize on opportunities and lacking precision in their finishing.
The second half saw Russia taking the lead early on through Menyailova’s goal. Despite India’s improved performance and scoring opportunities, Russia extended their lead with Frolova’s goal in the 80th minute. India faced challenges after Julan Nongmaithem’s red card, ending the match with a 0-3 defeat.
India is set to compete against Australia, Japan, and Lebanon in Group B of the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026 in Suzhou, China.
