The interim trade deal between India and the United States signifies a significant reduction in trade tensions, potentially resetting a strained relationship, according to Dhruva Jaishankar from Observer Research Foundation America. Notable aspects of the agreement include the removal of a tariff on India’s imports of Russian oil, providing clearer trade roadmaps and enhanced political engagement.
Jaishankar highlighted that the deal outlines an 18% tariff for most Indian imports, with some items facing lower rates, while addressing concerns related to national security tariffs that could impact a portion of Indian exports to the U.S. The agreement, though interim, sets the stage for a more comprehensive trade deal that could further lower tariffs.
The agreement also allows India to access advanced technologies, with specific mention of graphic processing units (GPUs), addressing previous concerns regarding U.S. export restrictions in this area. In the agricultural sector, India retains protective measures while opening up limited avenues for exports to the U.S., potentially benefiting the Indian farming industry.
A key component of the deal involves India’s commitment to purchasing $500 billion worth of U.S. goods over five years, encompassing sectors like civil aviation, defense, nuclear energy, and oil, gas, and coal. However, Jaishankar cautioned that this commitment hinges on production and technology constraints on the U.S. side, emphasizing that it reflects intent rather than a guaranteed outcome.
The agreement is viewed as a positive step in resolving trade and tariff issues between India and the U.S., which had previously led Indian exporters to explore alternative markets due to high tariffs. Jaishankar believes this deal could pave the way for enhanced political relations, with expectations of increased high-level engagements in the near future. Nonetheless, he highlighted the need to monitor trust-building efforts, the sustainability of the arrangement, and its differences from formal trade agreements like India’s pact with the European Union.
