India women’s hockey team made a stunning comeback from being two goals down to defeat the United States 3-2 in their opening Pool A match of the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup. Deepika scored a brace and Navneet Kaur added a goal to secure the victory. Deepika, who returned to the team impressively, was named the Player of the Match.
The United States took an early lead with goals from Ashley Sessa (4′) and Madeleine Zimmer (7′). However, India fought back strongly in the second quarter. Deepika’s penalty corner conversions in the 17th and 24th minutes leveled the score at 2-2. Navneet Kaur then scored from a penalty corner in the 28th minute to give India the lead before halftime.
In the second half, both teams pushed for more goals but were unable to break through each other’s defenses. With this win, India secured three points and moved to second place in Pool A, tied with Japan on points but behind on goal difference. India’s next match is against Japan on June 16 at 6:30 am.
