Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that Indian agricultural goods will now be exported to the United States without tariffs, while American farm products will not receive the same benefit in India. Chouhan emphasized that India’s agricultural and dairy interests are safeguarded, with the US reducing tariffs on various agricultural items.
The trade deal includes spices, tea, coffee, coconut products, nuts, fruits like mangoes and bananas, and certain grains. India’s agricultural exports in 2024-25 amounted to $4.45 billion, with an 88% surge in spice exports. Chouhan expressed optimism that this agreement will open up a vast market for Indian spices in the US.
Chouhan assured that no compromises have been made on Indian farmers’ interests, with sensitive items excluded from the agreement. Products like soybeans, corn, rice, dairy, and various fruits will not receive tariff concessions. Major grains and fruits, as well as dairy products, remain protected from US imports.
In terms of dairy, products like milk, cream, yogurt, butter, and cheese from the US will not be allowed into India. Additionally, Indian spices such as black pepper, cloves, and turmeric will not be imported from the US. Chouhan highlighted that this deal secures Indian spices and farmers.
This trade agreement is expected to create new opportunities for Indian farmers, women, and youth to progress in the agricultural sector.
