Indian artificial intelligence startup Sarvam has achieved unicorn status by securing $234 million in the initial phase of its $300 million Series B funding round, elevating its post-money valuation to $1.5 billion. The funding was spearheaded by HCLTech as a strategic investor, with contributions from Bessemer Venture Partners, Khosla Ventures, and Peak XV Partners, existing investors of the Bengaluru-based company. This funding milestone signifies a significant achievement for Sarvam, positioning itself as a comprehensive AI platform in India.
The raised capital will be utilized by Sarvam to propel research on cutting-edge AI models focusing on agentic AI, coding, and cybersecurity applications. Additionally, the company aims to enhance access to extensive computing infrastructure and expedite deployments across crucial sectors. HCLTech, as the lead strategic investor, will inject $150 million into the venture, fostering a collaboration that merges Sarvam’s AI research expertise with HCLTech’s enterprise proficiency and global client network.
HCLTech’s CEO and Managing Director, C Vijayakumar, emphasized that the investment in Sarvam is a pivotal move towards establishing India’s competitive and trustworthy AI ecosystem. The partnership is envisioned to construct a holistic sovereign AI environment for both Indian and international markets, leveraging Sarvam’s research capabilities and HCLTech’s industry experience. This synergy aims to create a comprehensive AI platform catering to the needs of enterprises and governments, ensuring secure, scalable, and ethical AI integration.
Sarvam’s Co-founder, Pratyush Kumar, reiterated the company’s commitment to innovation driven by research, particularly in developing AI systems tailored for India’s diverse landscape. The focus remains on crafting models proficient in Indian languages, voice recognition, and processing local content, offering cost-effective intelligence solutions for businesses and governmental entities. Sarvam has significantly expanded its AI repertoire in recent times, introducing foundational models like Sarvam 105B and Sarvam 30B, optimized for various applications. Notably, Sarvam Vision, the company’s document intelligence model, is actively employed in digitizing millions of records, ranging from insurance forms to land documents.
