External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu during the EU Gymnich meeting in Cyprus. Toiu expressed optimism about the future EU-India Free Trade Agreement, highlighting potential in defense, renewable energy, steel, automotive, fertilizers, and port infrastructure. Trade between the two countries reached $1.2 billion in 2025, showing a significant increase from the previous year.
The Romanian Foreign Minister mentioned the reinvigoration of the economic relationship after unblocking the Joint Economic Cooperation Commission. Both ministers anticipate a high-level visit to Romania later this year. Discussions also touched on the Middle East, focusing on energy security, connectivity, the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Jaishankar also met with other foreign ministers during the Cyprus meeting. Romania, a member of the EU, was part of the successful negotiations for the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, set to take effect in 2026. This agreement is expected to enhance bilateral ties significantly across various sectors.
