Field Marshal Cariappa, born on January 28, 1899, in Shanivarsanthe, Kodagu district, Karnataka, rose through the ranks to become one of India’s eminent military leaders. His tenure saw significant strides in modernizing the Indian Army, including the establishment of key formations like the Brigade of the Guards and the Parachute Regiment, known for their diverse recruitment practices.
In recognition of his service and leadership, President Harry S. Truman awarded Field Marshal Cariappa the US Legion of Merit in 1949.
