India’s Chief of Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, visited Sri Lanka and paid tribute at the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) Memorial to honor soldiers who sacrificed their lives during Operation Pawan. The memorial commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of Indian Army troops during the IPKF’s operations in Sri Lanka from 1987 to 1990, symbolizing courage and professionalism in peacekeeping efforts.
General Dwivedi’s visit to Sri Lanka signifies the commitment of both nations to strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation in defense-related areas. It follows India’s Operation Sagar Bandhu, where India provided immediate Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) support to Sri Lanka after Cyclone Ditwah caused extensive damage.
During his visit, General Dwivedi will engage with senior military and civil leaders in Sri Lanka, discussing training cooperation, capacity building, and regional security matters. The visit aims to enhance defense cooperation and foster trust with friendly nations in the Indian Ocean Region and West Asia, as part of India’s commitment to regional security.
