Indian Army Major Abhilasha Barak, a UN peacekeeping award recipient, emphasized the need for diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict in Lebanon. Barak stressed the importance of talks and diplomacy to maintain the ceasefire and pave the way for rebuilding the war-torn nation. She highlighted the significance of not only reconstructing physical infrastructure but also addressing the emotional trauma experienced by the Lebanese community.
Barak, recognized as the 2025 Military Gender Advocate of the Year by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, has been instrumental in empowering women and girls in Lebanon through various educational and health programs. As the Engagement Team Commander and Gender Focal Point in the Indian Battalion with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), she plays a crucial role in a region marked by heightened tensions between Hezbollah and Israel.
The situation in Lebanon remains precarious, with UNIFIL facing significant risks, including recent casualties among peacekeepers. The ceasefire efforts, brokered by US President Donald Trump, have been fragile, leading to widespread devastation in Lebanon. The resolution of conflicts in Lebanon is intertwined with broader geopolitical issues, such as the Iran war and the functioning of the Hormuz Strait, impacting global energy supplies.
Barak’s work in Lebanon focuses on engaging with the local community, particularly women and girls, to promote self-reliance and independence. Through vocational training, educational awareness sessions, and cultural exchanges, she aims to empower women and girls in the region. As the first Indian Army woman combat helicopter pilot, Barak’s contributions extend beyond military duties to humanitarian efforts and community engagement.
