In a significant achievement for Indian sports, President Droupadi Murmu congratulated Commonwealth Games 2026 Glasgow medalists Sharmila Dhankar, Shilpa K. Shyla, Sarvesh Anil Kushare, and Valluri Ajaya Babu for their outstanding performances. Sharmila secured gold in Women’s Shot Put F57 with a season-best throw of 9.81m, ending India’s 20-year wait for a para-athletics medal at the Commonwealth Games. She made history as India’s first female para-athletics gold medalist at the Games.
Adding to India’s success, Shilpa won bronze with a personal-best effort of 7.26m after Nigeria’s Eucharia Iyiazi had an attempt disqualified, elevating Shilpa to the podium. President Murmu praised Sharmila for her historic gold medal, hailing her as an inspiration for young athletes to excel in their respective fields. She also commended Shilpa for her determination and wished her success in future endeavors.
The Indian athletics campaign saw further triumph as Kushare secured a silver medal in the men’s high jump event by clearing 2.25m. Despite narrowly missing out on gold, Valluri Ajaya Babu’s exceptional performance in the men’s 79kg weightlifting event earned him a silver medal, bringing pride to the nation. The President lauded Babu’s determination and outstanding display, expressing hopes for more successes in his future endeavors.
India’s success in weightlifting continued with Gyaneshwari Yadav winning silver in the women’s 53kg event and Bindyarani Devi securing bronze in the women’s 58kg category. Bindyarani Devi, a two-time Commonwealth Games medalist, had previously won silver in the women’s 55kg event at Birmingham 2022. The President congratulated the weightlifters for their impressive performances, highlighting their determination and exceptional achievements that have brought pride to the nation.
