Indian cricketers Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan honored freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru on Martyrs’ Day, recalling their bravery and sacrifice. This day marks the execution of these revolutionaries by the British in 1931, with people nationwide commemorating their contributions to India’s independence movement. Leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi have also paid respects to these martyrs in past years, ensuring their legacy lives on.
Gambhir and Dhawan expressed their reverence for Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru, emphasizing their unwavering courage and sacrifice. Gambhir highlighted Bhagat Singh’s resolve, while Dhawan echoed sentiments of gratitude and respect for these iconic freedom fighters. Shaheed Diwas serves as an annual reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of India’s freedom fighters, with Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru symbolizing resistance and patriotism.
The Hindustan Socialist Republican Association, which included Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev, sought justice for Lala Lajpat Rai’s death by targeting British officer James Scott, leading to the Saunders shooting in 1928. Subsequently, they carried out bomb attacks in the Central Assembly to demand independence, resulting in their arrest and eventual death sentences. Driven by socialist ideals, they believed their sacrifice would spark a revolutionary movement against colonial rule.
