The Indian Deaf Women’s Cricket Team made history by clinching their first international T20 series victory, triumphing over the Sri Lankan Deaf Women’s Cricket Team with a 5-0 score. Competing at the De Soysa International Cricket Stadium in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, the Indian team secured a remarkable win in the final match on July 13, defeating Sri Lanka by 7 wickets after restricting them to 40/10 in 13.5 overs.
The series concluded with a grand closing ceremony graced by Chief Guests Sunil Kumara Gamage, Minister of Sports of Sri Lanka, and Maitrey Kulkarni, Deputy High Commissioner of India. Sugath Wasantha, Member of Parliament of Sri Lanka, also attended as the Guest of Honour. During the ceremony, trophies were presented to the champion and runner-up teams by Maitrey Kulkarni.
Sumit Jain, President of the Indian Deaf Cricket Association (IDCA), expressed his pride in the Indian women’s team’s performance, highlighting their readiness to excel on the international stage akin to their male counterparts. He extended gratitude to the Sri Lanka Deaf Cricket Association, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sri Lanka, sponsors, and the management and ground staff at De Soysa International Stadium. Jain congratulated both Indian and Sri Lankan players on their achievement and wished them success in the future.
Roma Balwani, CEO of IDCA, commended the women cricketers for their exceptional 4-0 series win on their international T20 debut, emphasizing their role as global ambassadors for Indian deaf women’s cricket. She expressed deep appreciation to Serum Institute of India, Cyrus Poonawalla Group, and the Sri Lankan hosts for their support. Balwani also acknowledged the competitive spirit shown by the Sri Lankan women’s team throughout the week.
