Senior BJP leader Ram Madhav highlighted the significant role played by the Indian diaspora in enhancing India’s global influence. Speaking at an Overseas Friends of BJP (OFBJP) event in Washington, Madhav emphasized the emotional and political ties that overseas Indians maintain with their homeland. He addressed concerns regarding dual citizenship and voting rights for non-resident Indians (NRIs), citing complex geopolitical and constitutional challenges faced by India.
Madhav explained that issues like territorial disputes, geopolitical complexities, and regional security considerations make granting dual citizenship a nuanced matter. He mentioned the extension of benefits under the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) framework as a step taken by India to address the diaspora’s needs. While emphasizing the government’s friendliness towards NRIs, Madhav assured that further enhancements could be considered based on demands.
The BJP leader underscored the government’s proactive stance on diaspora-related issues, including addressing concerns over illegal immigration. Madhav stressed the importance of handling such matters discreetly and responsibly, advocating for a balanced and restrained approach in international affairs. He praised the Indian diaspora for its role in strengthening India-US relations and highlighted the community’s growing influence in countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
