India boasts 44 properties listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, comprising 36 cultural world heritage sites, seven natural world heritage sites, and one mixed world heritage property. These sites hold legal protection under an international convention managed by UNESCO, recognizing their cultural, historical, or scientific significance. World Heritage sites are esteemed for their exceptional value to humanity, encompassing both cultural and natural heritage worldwide.
The journey of India’s World Heritage recognition began with Agra Fort in 1983, followed by iconic sites like Taj Mahal, Ellora Caves, and Ajanta Caves in the same year. These sites were acknowledged by the World Heritage Committee for their outstanding cultural and historical importance.
