The Indian Embassy in Indonesia has revealed plans to mark the ‘Tagore-Dewantara Year of Cultural and Educational Diplomacy’ from July 2026 to September 2027. This initiative celebrates a shared cultural journey between India and Indonesia, honoring Rabindranath Tagore and Ki Hadjar Dewantara.
During this period, various events will take place, including the Indonesia Fashion Week where Indian motifs will merge with Indonesian Batik in August 2026. Additionally, activities like Tagore-Dewantara school quizzes and Sanskrit learning programs will commence in August. The Tagore Film Festival is scheduled to be held in Jakarta in September.
Furthermore, a textile heritage exhibition titled “Sarong to Saree” will be showcased in January. The embassy invites everyone to partake in the upcoming festivals, literature events, film screenings, and academic exchanges over the next 15 months.
The ‘Tagore-Dewantara Year of Cultural and Educational Diplomacy’ was announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Indonesia, signifying a significant cultural and educational collaboration between the two nations. This commemoration will encompass a wide array of activities such as festivals, films, fashion shows, textile exhibitions, literary events, and educational exchanges until September 2027.
The year 2026-27 marks a century since Rabindranath Tagore, Asia’s first Nobel laureate, visited Java and Bali in 1927. His journey highlighted the importance of art, learning, and self-belief in shaping a nation. The decision to honor this legacy through the Tagore-Dewantara Year reflects the shared values of freedom, creativity, and education that both India and Indonesia uphold.
