Jagpreet Kaur, First Secretary of the Embassy of India in Bangkok, emphasized India’s initiatives in tackling climate change at the 9th session of the Committee on Environment and Development (CED9) of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). India’s contributions at national, regional, and global levels, including projects like the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE) movement, were underscored in her statement.
The Embassy of India in Bangkok stated that Ms. Jagpreet Kaur delivered India’s country statement during the session, highlighting efforts such as the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA). The importance of providing sufficient and timely financial support to developing nations for adaptation measures was also stressed in the address.
The Committee on Environment and Development, a UNESCAP subsidiary body, meets biennially to assess regional trends, set action priorities, and foster collaboration among governments, civil society, and international organizations. It offers recommendations to the Commission and convenes ministerial-level meetings every four years to provide strategic guidance on addressing development challenges.
UNESCAP’s CED9 session will evaluate advancements in the priority areas outlined in the CED7 Ministerial Declaration, focusing on enhancing policy coherence and coordinated efforts to promote Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and combat the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution across various dimensions.
