External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, currently visiting Suriname, engaged in discussions with top officials to enhance bilateral relations between the two countries. Upon his arrival in Paramaribo, he was warmly greeted by his counterpart, Melvin Bouva. Subsequently, both leaders conducted bilateral talks.
Accompanied by Indian officials, Jaishankar met with Surinamese delegations to review bilateral ties during the 9th Joint Commission Meeting in Paramaribo. Following the discussions, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of various aspects such as trade, digital initiatives, defense, energy, and cultural exchanges in deepening the ties between the nations.
During his visit, Jaishankar met with Suriname’s President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons to reinforce the enduring partnership between India and Suriname. He also paid respects at the ‘Monument for the Fallen Heroes’ in Marienburg, honoring Indian indentured laborers who fought against colonialism in 1902.
Interacting with the Indian community in Suriname, Jaishankar highlighted India’s development journey and reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Suriname’s growth. He also visited the Baba and Mai monument, commemorating the first Indian arrivals in Suriname, and paid tribute at Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in central Paramaribo.
