Indian football encountered a troubling situation at Kochi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium as head coach Khalid Jamil and players were reportedly denied entry. This incident, occurring before India’s AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Hong Kong, stemmed from a payment dispute between the Kerala Football Association and stadium authorities. Fans expressed outrage on social media, labeling the incident a “national disgrace.”

The refusal of entry to the national team coach sparked criticism, with supporters deeming it a significant setback for Indian football. The incident led to the cancellation of the pre-match press conference, drawing strong reactions from fans who highlighted the need for a more robust footballing ecosystem in India. Kerala-based fans, known for their passion for the sport, expressed deep disappointment and called for accountability from the authorities.

The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) reportedly demanded a substantial security deposit and rent to allow access to the stadium, leading to the standoff. Despite the controversy, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) assured that the AFC Asian Cup qualifier match between India and Hong Kong would proceed as scheduled in Kochi. India’s participation in the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 has already been ruled out, making the upcoming match crucial for future preparations.
