The Indian High Commission in Accra played a crucial role in arranging the return of nine Indian seafarers who were stuck in Ghana. These crew members of M/V Rahaf Moon had been stranded in Ghana for a period. With the cooperation of the Ghana Maritime Authority, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and the International Transport Workers Federation, the High Commission ensured their safe repatriation to India via Accra International Airport on July 23, 2026.

This successful repatriation effort highlights India’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad and at sea. The Government of India remains dedicated to safeguarding Indian nationals in foreign countries and on the high seas, as demonstrated by this initiative.

In response to security concerns in the Gulf region, the Directorate General of Maritime Administration instructed ship owners and managers to refrain from deploying Indian seafarers on vessels traveling through the Strait of Hormuz until further notice. This precautionary measure aims to protect Indian seafarers amidst escalating security threats in the region.

Amid reports of attacks on merchant vessels such as Mombasa B, Al Bahyah, GFS Galaxy, MT WEDYAN, and AL REKAYYAT, the risks faced by seafarers in the area have significantly increased. The recent incidents have prompted authorities to take proactive steps to ensure the safety and security of seafarers operating in conflict-affected regions.

The Ministry of External Affairs disclosed that amid rising tensions in the Middle East, 14 Indian seafarers have lost their lives, and two remain missing. The evolving situation in the region has raised concerns about potential disruptions to shipping activities through the Hormuz Strait.
