India’s insurgent consumer brands have collectively earned more than $7.5 billion in revenue in FY25, showing a growth of 3.75 times over five years, surpassing the market by 3.3 times, as per a report by Bain & Company and DSG Consumer Partners. These brands have transformed from niche players to significant forces in India’s consumer market, reshaping various categories by addressing unmet consumer needs. The analysis focused on 240 insurgent brands established post-2007 that raised a minimum of $3 million, revealing that jewelry insurgents grew around 10.6 times compared to market averages, while beauty and personal care brands grew about 4.3 times.
Insurgent Indian brands have revolutionized the way consumer categories are developed and expanded in the country. They have excelled by catering to emerging consumer needs, mastering media and channel deployment, and driving rapid innovation, stated Rohit Shankar, Partner at Bain & Company. The potential for insurgency spans across different consumer sectors, with insurgent brands consistently outperforming established players over the past five years. Notably, jewelry insurgents have grown by nearly 6.5 times, followed by beauty and personal care at 6 times, and home & kitchen, as well as electric wearables and devices, at 4.5-5 times.
Digital and quick commerce have played crucial roles in empowering the new wave of consumer insurgents, according to Rohit. A significant finding is that almost half of these insurgent brands are based outside India’s top three metros, with many founders having strong educational backgrounds, although only a small fraction hail from elite institutions. The report also highlights that more than 50% of the best-selling products in personal care and snacking on a leading e-commerce platform were introduced in the last five years.
Despite the growth, less than 1% of consumer companies established post-2008 have crossed INR 100 crore in revenue. Moreover, only 22% of insurgent brands with revenues exceeding Rs 100 crore have surpassed 500 crores, indicating the challenges in sustaining breakout growth.
