Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and Bihar Governor Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain represented India at the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in Tehran. They conveyed India’s respects during the ceremony. The new Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, succeeded his father after Ayatollah Khamenei’s death in an attack by the US and Israel.
The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the significance of the civilizational ties and people-to-people connections between India and Iran. This representation at the funeral ceremony strengthens the foundation for political and economic engagements between the two nations. Farewell ceremonies are scheduled in Tehran and Qom, with the final funeral ceremony and burial to take place in Mashhad.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri also expressed condolences on behalf of the Indian government at the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi. He signed the condolence book and met with the Iranian Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, to offer sympathies over the demise of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Indian government’s gesture of condolences reflects the strong ties between India and Iran during this period of mourning.
