Indian surfing enthusiasts are gearing up for the seventh edition of the Indian Open of Surfing 2026, a significant event in the national surfing series scheduled to be held from May 29 to 31 at the Blue Bay Tannirbhavi Eco Beach in Mangalore, Karnataka. This year’s competition holds particular importance as it coincides with the lead-up to surfing’s debut at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with top Indian surfers vying to solidify their positions in the national rankings and secure spots for the Asian Games.
India has secured two quota spots each in the Men’s Open Shortboard and Women’s Open Shortboard events for the Asian Games, heightening the competition’s intensity during this domestic season. The Indian Open serves as a crucial event in the national championship calendar, playing a pivotal role in the selection process for Team India ahead of the continental event. The spotlight in Mangalore is expected to shine on a select group of surfers contending for coveted spots in Team India.
Ramesh Budihal, a standout figure in Indian surfing, enters the championship with a strong track record, having made history at the Asian Surfing Championships 2025 by clinching a bronze medal. Another contender, Sivaraj Babu, arrives with momentum following his victory at the Little Andaman Pro 2026, solidifying his position as a top surfer in the country. The performances in Mangalore will be crucial for surfers like Kishore Kumar, who aims to secure a spot in the Men’s Open Shortboard event for the Asian Games.
The competition also highlights emerging talents like Kishore Kumar, who has made a mark on the domestic circuit with impressive performances and international representation. Srikanth D, known for his technical prowess and composure under pressure, continues to impress on the national surfing scene.
