Indian Railways has introduced automated AI-camera stain detection technology in laundries at Pune Division, Central Railway, and Jaipur and Jodhpur division, North Western Railway to ensure the quality of washed linen. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, responding to a query in the Rajya Sabha, stated that the Railways offers clean and hygienic linen to passengers in AC classes on every journey. The lifespan of various linen items is determined by existing Railway regulations and is regularly assessed based on usage, condition, and usability.
Each bedroll packet consists of two bed sheets, one pillow cover, and a hand towel. One bed sheet is meant to be placed on the sleeper seat, while the extra bed sheet in the standard bedroll kit serves as a layer beneath the blanket to prevent direct contact with the passenger’s body. This blanket cover sheet is washed after a single use. As part of a trial initiative to improve passenger comfort, blanket covers are being provided to all AC class passengers on trains run by North Western Railway and on the newly launched Vande Bharat Sleeper Train between Kamakhya and Howrah, a move that has been well-received by passengers.
Whito-Meters are utilized in all mechanized laundries to verify the cleanliness of linen. CCTV cameras have been installed in laundries throughout Indian Railways to oversee laundry operations. The minister also mentioned that the installation of CCTV surveillance systems at railway stations, passenger coaches, and other railway premises is being planned network-wide to bolster passenger safety and enhance security surveillance. Currently, CCTV surveillance systems have been set up at 3,215 railway stations and 13,409 passenger coaches.
