Indian Railways efficiently managed rail traffic during the Mauni Amavasya period by running 244 special trains across the country since January 3. These special trains, including 31 from Northern Railway (NR), 158 from North Central Railway (NCR), and 55 from North Eastern Railway (NER), catered to around 4.5 lakh passengers, ensuring hassle-free and safe journeys for devotees.
On January 18, Prayagraj experienced a surge in festive travel with 40 special trains in operation, carrying approximately 1 lakh passengers. All regular trains ran as per schedule, showcasing Indian Railways’ effective planning and operational efficiency during the festive season.
The successful operation of these special trains underscores Indian Railways’ dedication to providing secure and uninterrupted services to passengers during peak festive periods. By leveraging technology, resource planning, and inter-zonal coordination, the railways efficiently managed the large-scale movement of passengers.
In 2025, Indian Railways conducted over 43,000 special train trips to facilitate smooth travel and manage the rush during significant religious festivals and peak holiday seasons. Notably, during Maha Kumbh, Indian Railways operated 17,340 special train trips between January 13 and February 28, 2025, to accommodate a vast number of pilgrims.
The summer travel season of 2025 witnessed the operation of 12,417 Summer Special train trips from April 1 to June 30, ensuring high-quality service during peak vacation months. Additionally, for Chhath Puja 2025, Indian Railways strengthened its special arrangements by operating 12,383 special train trips between October 1 and November 30, 2025, marking a significant increase from the previous year.
