Indian Railways has announced plans to double the originating train capacity in 48 major cities across the country by 2030. This initiative is in response to the increasing demand for travel. The expansion includes enhancing current terminals with more platforms, stabling lines, pit lines, and shunting facilities.
To accommodate the growth, Indian Railways will also develop maintenance facilities like mega coaching complexes and upgrade signaling systems. The goal is to handle the increased number of trains efficiently at various points. The plan involves identifying and establishing new terminals in urban areas as well.
The strategy includes balancing capacity not only at terminals but also at stations around them. For instance, locations like Hadapsar, Khadki, and Alandi will see capacity enhancements along with improvements at Pune station. This comprehensive approach will cater to both suburban and non-suburban traffic needs in the identified cities.
Indian Railways aims to submit a detailed plan to the Planning Directorate for the 48 major cities. This plan will outline the proposed works required to achieve the target of doubling the train handling capacity within a specified timeframe. The cities selected for this capacity enhancement initiative include major metros and state capitals, along with other significant urban centers.
In a directive to General Managers of all Zonal Railways, Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar emphasized the need for specific plans with clear timelines and outcomes. The focus is not only on increasing terminal capacity but also on enhancing sectional capacity and addressing operational constraints effectively across divisions.
