Gulveer Singh, a 27-year-old Asian Games bronze medallist in the men’s 10,000m, achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first Indian runner to complete a mile in under four minutes at the 24th Annual Music City Track Carnival held at Lee University, Cleveland Campus in the USA. Singh clocked an impressive time of 3:55.63 seconds to secure the top spot in the Men’s 1 Mile Pro event, surpassing competitors from the USA.
Singh, who is currently based in the USA, is gearing up for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games in Japan. Notably, he holds the distinction of being the first Indian to break the 13-minute barrier in the 5,000m track race, with a national men’s 5,000m indoor record of 12:59.77 seconds. Additionally, Singh also boasts the men’s 10,000m national track record of 27:00.22.
This achievement adds to a series of record-breaking performances by Indian athletes across different events globally. In a recent display of talent, high jumper Pooja set a new national and meet record during the 22nd Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Hong Kong, clinching the gold medal with a jump of 1.93m. Pooja’s performance not only surpassed the decade-old national record but also outshone the previous Asian U20 meet record.
At the Federation Cup in Ranchi, Gurindervir Singh made history by clocking 10.09s in the 100m event, securing qualification for the Commonwealth and Asian Games. Other notable achievements include Vishal TK breaking the 400m barrier by running in 44.98s, and Tejaswin Shankar achieving over 8000 decathlon points for the first time in India.
