Indian stock exchanges, including the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the BSE, were closed on Friday in observance of Muharram. Trading was suspended across all equity market segments, such as equity derivatives, currency derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB).
The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) also remained closed during the morning session but was scheduled to resume trading in the evening session starting at 5 pm. Additionally, the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX), focusing on agricultural commodities, remained closed for the entire day.
After the Muharram holiday, the stock market will be open for nearly three months until the next scheduled holiday on September 14 for Ganesh Chaturthi. Subsequent market closures are planned for various festivals including Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, Dussehra, Diwali-Balipratipada, Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev, and Christmas.
In the previous session, despite profit booking in IT and metal stocks, the equity benchmarks ended on a positive note, with Sensex closing over 100 points higher at 77,100.47 and Nifty up by 34.35 points at 24,056. Among the Nifty constituents, several top losers included Hindalco Industries, Power Grid, Bharti Airtel, and Infosys.
Furthermore, the broader markets saw a decline, with both Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices dropping by 0.5 percent each. Market participants will enjoy a three-day weekend as the holiday fell on a Friday, with trading set to resume on Monday, June 29.
