Arnav Paparkar, an 18-year-old from Pune, saw his impressive run at the 2026 Wimbledon Junior Championships conclude with a 2-6, 5-7 loss to Jordan Lee from the United States in the boys’ singles quarterfinals. Despite the defeat, Paparkar made history as the first Indian player in 36 years to reach the Wimbledon boys’ singles quarterfinals since Leander Paes’ victory in 1990.
Paparkar’s journey to the quarterfinals was marked by notable victories, including a significant upset against junior World No. 3 Keaton Hance of the United States with a score of 6-2, 6-3. He continued his success by defeating Japan’s Ryo Tabata 6-2, 6-1 to secure his first Grand Slam junior quarter-final berth.
Reflecting on his achievement, Paparkar expressed his happiness over the win against Tabata, emphasizing the special milestone of reaching his first Grand Slam quarter-final at Wimbledon. He described the match as mentally challenging despite the seemingly comfortable scoreline, acknowledging the difficulties of facing an injured opponent in a tennis match.
Former India Davis Cup captain Anand Amritraj commended Paparkar’s versatile skills and performance throughout his remarkable Wimbledon journey. Amritraj highlighted Paparkar’s diverse playing style, strategic shot selection, strong serve, and overall potential for a successful future in tennis.
