Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, commended weightlifter Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam for her impressive performance in securing a bronze medal in the women’s 58kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Bindyarani clinched the bronze with a total lift of 199kg, excelling in both the snatch and clean and jerk categories. This achievement adds to India’s medal count at the Games.

Dr. Mandaviya lauded Bindyarani’s grit and success, highlighting her contribution to India’s fifth weightlifting medal. The gold in the event was claimed by Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal with a lift of 229kg, followed by Canada’s Ann Sophie Taschereau who secured the silver. Bindyarani’s strong clean and jerk performance set her apart, propelling her to the podium position.

In a closely contested competition, Bindyarani’s resilience and skill were evident as she outperformed her competitors to secure the bronze. Her consistent success on the international stage underscores her status as one of India’s top weightlifters. This medal further solidifies India’s strong presence in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games, showcasing the country’s prowess in the sport.
