India’s fast bowler Arshdeep Singh has been fined 15% of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Final against New Zealand. Arshdeep was found to have violated Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to inappropriate or dangerous behavior involving a ball or cricket equipment during an International Match.
Moreover, Arshdeep has received one demerit point on his disciplinary record, marking his first offense within a 24-month period. The incident took place during the 11th over when New Zealand was struggling while chasing a target of 256, with a score of 102/5. Mitchell, the affected player, expressed his displeasure as Arshdeep walked away calmly after the incident.
Arshdeep accepted the penalty proposed by Andy Pycroft, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, eliminating the need for a formal hearing. The charge was issued by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Alex Wharf, along with third umpire Allahuddien Paleker and fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock.
Level 1 breaches can lead to penalties ranging from a formal reprimand to a fine of up to 50% of the player’s match fee, accompanied by one or two demerit points. In a video shared by the BlackCaps, Arshdeep was seen apologizing to Mitchell, with the two players eventually sharing a light moment.
During an interview with broadcasters after India’s victory, Arshdeep explained that the incident was unintentional and arose from a reverse-swing throw that hit Mitchell. He expressed regret for the action and clarified his actions to ensure sportsmanship.
