India’s approach to the conflict in West Asia shows a commitment to engaging with all regional actors without bias. The country’s long-standing principle of strategic autonomy guides its strategy, focusing on national interests while considering history, geography, and future opportunities. Despite the deepening India-Israel partnership, New Delhi has maintained a nuanced stance in the current crisis to safeguard its interests in the Persian Gulf and wider West Asian region.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has been actively involved in diplomatic efforts, holding discussions with his Iranian counterpart and hosting the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister earlier this month. Emphasizing the importance of dialogue and diplomacy, India’s consistent message has been to resolve conflicts through peaceful means. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is closely monitoring the situation in West Asia, recognizing the heightened regional security concerns arising from the conflict.

India’s priority remains the safety of its citizens in the Gulf region, with efforts already underway to facilitate the return of stranded Indians. EAM Jaishankar, addressing the Rajya Sabha, highlighted the destructive impact of the conflict and stressed the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states in the region. The Indian government’s focus on de-escalation through dialogue underscores its commitment to stability in West Asia.
