India’s Commerce and Industry Minister recently held discussions with Finland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Riikka Purra, focusing on enhancing economic and financial cooperation between the two countries. They explored avenues to strengthen trade and investment ties, particularly under the India-EU free trade agreement. The visit aimed at expanding collaboration in digitalization and emerging sectors, with a special emphasis on fostering India-Finland engagement.
The Minister, after successful visits to Belgium and Spain, engaged in productive talks with Finland’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Sakari Puisto. Discussions revolved around deepening cooperation in investments, innovation, research and development, startups, and business partnerships. The leaders also delved into potential collaborations in areas such as artificial intelligence, 6G, quantum technologies, semiconductors, space, and sustainability.
The visit highlighted the mutual interest in strengthening cooperation in innovation, advanced manufacturing, clean energy, digital technologies, and industrial research. Additionally, the agenda included participation in the India-Finland Business Roundtable, where discussions with Finnish companies focused on digitalization, clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and the circular economy. An MoU between CII and Business Finland was set to be signed to bolster institutional collaboration, as per an earlier statement.
During the visit, the Minister planned to visit prominent Finnish companies and innovation institutions like Nokia Corporation, VTT Research Centre, KONE Corporation, and the Kemppi Group. The aim was to explore collaboration opportunities in various sectors including telecom infrastructure, 6G research, smart mobility, advanced manufacturing, EV charging infrastructure, frontier technologies, sustainable mobility, industrial innovation, and investment. The visit was strategically timed to strengthen economic cooperation and facilitate the early implementation of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, underscoring the commitment of both sides to enhance economic ties.
