India’s data centre industry is poised to become a major source of employment in the country, with a projected demand for about one lakh skilled professionals by 2030. The sector’s installed capacity is expected to surge from 1.5 GW to nearly 6.5 GW by the end of this decade, alongside a market value set to surpass $22 billion. Investment commitments in the industry have already exceeded $126 billion, marking it as one of India’s fastest-growing infrastructure sectors.

Experts caution that a shortage of skilled workers could impede the industry’s growth unless concerted efforts are made by educational institutions, businesses, and policymakers to equip the workforce with the necessary skills. Sachin Alug, CEO of NLB Services, emphasized that the expansion of data centre and AI infrastructure in India presents a significant opportunity for the country’s youth.

The digital transformation wave is fueling demand for professionals well-versed in AI infrastructure, cloud operations, automation, power systems, and critical facilities management. The industry is not just about job creation but about nurturing a workforce capable of driving India’s digital economy in the long run. The rise of artificial intelligence is particularly driving the need for experts in AI infrastructure engineering, cloud operations, DevOps, and data centre automation.

As AI workloads are expected to occupy a substantial portion of India’s data centre capacity, expertise in AI infrastructure is becoming increasingly crucial for industry entrants. Simultaneously, the sector is witnessing a growing need for specialists in areas like AI Infrastructure Operations, Liquid Cooling, Energy Optimization, Critical Facilities Management, and Power Systems. These roles are vital for the operation of advanced AI-powered data centres that require sophisticated cooling, energy management, and infrastructure capabilities.
