India’s data centre industry is poised to become a major source of employment in the country, with a projected demand for about one lakh skilled professionals by 2030. The sector’s installed capacity is expected to surge from 1.5 GW to nearly 6.5 GW by the end of this decade, alongside a market value set to surpass $22 billion. Investment commitments in the industry have already exceeded $126 billion, marking it as one of India’s fastest-growing infrastructure sectors.
Experts caution that a shortage of skilled workers could impede the industry’s growth unless concerted efforts are made by educational institutions, businesses, and policymakers to equip the workforce with the necessary skills. Sachin Alug, CEO of NLB Services, emphasized that the expansion of data centre and AI infrastructure in India presents a significant opportunity for the country’s youth.
The digital transformation wave is fueling demand for professionals well-versed in AI infrastructure, cloud operations, automation, power systems, and critical facilities management. The industry is not just about job creation but about nurturing a workforce capable of driving India’s digital economy in the long run. These roles are vital for the operation of advanced AI-powered data centres that require sophisticated cooling, energy management, and infrastructure capabilities.
