India’s drone industry is expanding swiftly, surpassing 38,500 registered drones and boasting close to 39,890 DGCA-certified remote pilots as of February 2026. The country has established more than 240 approved training organizations to supply skilled personnel for drone operations and maintenance. This growth signifies the development of a holistic ecosystem involving various stakeholders like manufacturers, software developers, service providers, training institutions, certified pilots, startups, research bodies, and digital platforms, all functioning under a unified regulatory framework.

Drones have become integral across vital sectors such as agriculture, land surveys, infrastructure monitoring, disaster assessment, and public service delivery, showcasing their ability to enhance governance efficiency, transparency, and precision. Notably, under the SVAMITVA Scheme, drones have surveyed 3.28 lakh villages and issued 2.76 crore property cards for 1.82 lakh villages in 31 states.

India’s drone sector has evolved from experimental phases to a mainstream, innovation-centric industry, supported by progressive policies, regulatory assistance, and targeted financial incentives. The government’s structured approach, including initiatives promoting women-led entrepreneurship, rural accessibility, and local manufacturing, encourages technological advancements and widespread drone adoption. Official data reveals the distribution of 1,094 drones to women self-help groups, with over 500 allocated under the Namo Drone Didi initiative, enhancing agricultural productivity and livelihoods.

Looking forward, India aims to further develop indigenous manufacturing, enhance remote pilot training, and integrate drones into state and central programs to leverage them for socio-economic empowerment, infrastructure monitoring, and national security purposes. These unmanned aerial systems are also utilized for monitoring railways and highways across the country, supported by increasing government backing through budget allocations, innovation grants, and strategic deployment, positioning India as a global leader in drone technology.
