India’s installed electricity generation capacity has reached 524 GW as of February 28, 2026, ensuring adequate availability of electricity across the country. Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik informed the Parliament that India has transitioned from a power deficit to a power-sufficient nation by adding 296.388 GW capacity since 2014. The government has focused on expanding generation capacity and enhancing infrastructure to strengthen the power sector significantly.
Electricity supply in India has largely met demand in recent years, with minor shortfalls primarily attributed to issues in state transmission and distribution systems rather than power generation shortages. The responsibility of ensuring reliable and quality power supply lies with the respective State Government/Distribution Utility, according to Naik. To enhance power supply in urban and rural areas, the government has supported states through schemes like the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana and the Saubhagya scheme.
The government projects India’s installed capacity to increase to 874 GW by 2031-32 as per the National Electricity Plan. States have been urged to develop long-term resource adequacy plans to ensure that generation capacity stays ahead of the rising demand for electricity.
