India’s ethanol blending program has a rich history predating the current government, with a gradual transition from E10 to E20 based on extensive testing and consultations. The initiative, launched in 2001 and formalized in 2004, saw E5 rollout by 2006, with policy notification in 2013. Despite early targets, blending remained low until 2014.
Recognizing the challenge of ethanol production, the government shifted focus in 2018 with the National Policy on Biofuels, initiating a coordinated effort across ministries to scale up ethanol production. Landmark steps in 2021 included the establishment of Dedicated Ethanol Plants and a roadmap for ethanol blending after consultations with stakeholders.
Consultations with stakeholders, including automobile manufacturers, preceded the rollout of E20, ensuring readiness across the ecosystem. Real-world evidence from companies like Maruti Suzuki and Hero MotoCorp showed no issues with E20 fuel. The ministry emphasized adherence to quality standards and strict enforcement against any compromise in fuel quality.
