India’s fast bowling coach, Morne Morkel, has revealed plans to try out different players at the number three batting position in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. This decision comes as Virat Kohli will be missing from the team due to a hamstring injury sustained during the IPL 2026 final. Potential candidates for the position include Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Morkel mentioned in a pre-match press conference that the team will utilize these one-day games to assess various players in different slots and explore team structure options. While Rahul has typically batted in the middle order, Kishan was seen taking on keeping duties, hinting at a possible promotion for him in the upcoming match.
The fast bowling coach also highlighted the inclusion of new pacers, Prince Yadav and Gurnoor Brar, who are set to make their international debuts during the series. Morkel praised their performance in training, noting their confidence and energy, indicating a promising start for the young bowlers.
In addition, Morkel reassured fans about Rohit Sharma’s fitness, dispelling concerns about a potential injury. Despite using a different thigh pad during training, Sharma has passed all fitness tests and is in good shape for the matches ahead. Morkel expressed excitement about Sharma’s return, emphasizing the valuable experience and composure he brings to the team.
