India’s finished steel production in May reached 13.8 million tonnes, marking a 6.8% increase from the previous year’s 12.9 million tonnes, as per the Ministry of Steel data. The country’s consumption of finished steel also rose by 9.3% to 14.4 million tonnes in May compared to 13.1 million tonnes in the same period last year. This surge in demand was attributed to major infrastructure projects initiated by the government in sectors like highways, railways, and ports.
India’s crude steel production for May stood at 14.1 million tonnes, up from 13.8 million tonnes in the corresponding month of the previous year. The nation’s total crude steelmaking capacity has now reached nearly 221.9 million tonnes per annum as of May 2026, aligning with the National Steel Policy target of 300 million tonnes per annum by 2030.
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) reported its FY2025-26 financial results in May 2026, revealing record sales volume of 19.93 million tonnes and revenue of Rs 110,810 crore. With a year-on-year sales volume increase of 11.4%, the company’s performance reflected robust market demand and enhanced operational efficiency.
SAIL and NMDC are actively pursuing coking coal asset acquisitions and nickel supplies in Russia following a delegation visit in May 2026. SAIL has initiated an internal committee to evaluate potential opportunities, while NMDC is focusing on overseas coal assets to bolster long-term raw material security. Additionally, SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant obtained Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification for its TMT Bars, emphasizing its commitment to sustainable steel production.
