Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch India’s inaugural hydrogen-powered train from Jind, Haryana, on Friday. This initiative places India among a select group of nations exploring hydrogen technology for eco-friendly rail travel. The train will operate between Jind and Sonipat, showcasing Indian Railways’ dedication to innovation and sustainable transportation.
The Jind-Sonipat route has been chosen as the pilot project for this endeavor. A local hydrogen storage and refueling facility has been established in Jind to support the train’s operations. The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has authorized the storage and dispensing of compressed hydrogen gas at this facility.
By introducing the hydrogen-powered train, India joins countries like Germany, Japan, China, and the United States in the pursuit of cleaner rail transport using hydrogen. This technology, which relies on hydrogen fuel cells to produce electricity with water vapor as the sole emission, is recognized globally as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fossil fuel systems.
Hydrogen refueling operations will be supported by a dedicated compression system, ensuring the train’s reliable and safe functioning. Prime Minister Modi will also virtually inaugurate the revamped Tikamgarh railway station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, as announced by the Madhya Pradesh government.
