India’s foldable smartphone market is projected to exceed 3 million cumulative shipments by the end of 2026, with an estimated compound annual growth rate of almost 80% from 2019 to 2026, as per a recent report. Despite increasing device prices and a softer demand environment, foldable smartphone shipments are anticipated to grow approximately 8% year-on-year in 2026, outpacing the broader smartphone market. The rising costs of essential components like DRAM and NAND flash memory are contributing to the escalation in smartphone prices.

Demand for foldable devices is foreseen to remain robust, particularly among consumers in the premium segment who value innovative form factors, productivity, and enhanced user experiences over initial expenses. The availability of easier financing options and attractive equated monthly installment (EMI) schemes is enhancing the accessibility of foldable smartphones, fostering consistent adoption even in a challenging pricing landscape. Samsung is poised to dominate India’s foldable smartphone market in 2026, accounting for nearly 89% of shipments, driven by its Galaxy Z series and a dedicated customer base that appreciates the foldable design.

Foldable smartphones are expected to play a more significant role in India’s premium smartphone sector, although their market presence is likely to remain niche due to their premium pricing. The average selling price (ASP) of foldable smartphones is forecasted to hover around $1,800 in 2026, nearly five times the average selling price of smartphones in India. Enhancements in durability, sleeker designs, extended battery life, and an improved user experience are anticipated to enhance the practicality of foldable devices for everyday use. The report also highlights the increasing entry of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) into the foldable smartphone segment, offering a wider array of devices across various price points and form factors.

Book-type foldables are expected to constitute a significant portion of foldable smartphone shipments in 2026, driven by their expansive displays, versatile applications, and features geared towards productivity. While foldable smartphones may maintain a relatively small market share in the overall smartphone industry, they are positioned to become a key driver of long-term growth in India’s premium smartphone segment.
