India’s High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, Rajeev Kumar, met with the country’s Foreign Minister, Justin Tkatchenko, to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance mutual cooperation. The meeting aimed at advancing areas of collaboration between the two nations.
Last year, Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, visited Papua New Guinea to represent Prime Minister Narendra Modi at events commemorating the country’s 50th Independence anniversary. During the visit, Margherita conveyed PM Modi’s greetings to Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape and emphasized the commitment to deepen bilateral and people-to-people ties.
President Droupadi Murmu also extended warm greetings from the people and Government of India to Papua New Guinea on its 50th Independence anniversary. This gesture highlighted the strong bond between the two nations and their shared commitment to fostering closer relations.
The visit by MoS Margherita followed PM Modi’s significant trip to Papua New Guinea in 2023, where both countries pledged to strengthen bilateral ties, expand development partnerships, and enhance defense cooperation. The FIPIC III Summit hosted by PM Modi in Port Moresby in 2014 with his counterpart James Marape marked a milestone in the collaboration between India and 14 Pacific Island Countries.
