India’s systematic investment plan (SIP) has shown significant growth over the past decade, with the monthly SIP book expanding nearly tenfold to reach Rs 30,954 crore in May 2026, as per a report by ValueMetrics. Despite facing various disruptions such as demonetisation, Covid-19, the Russia-Ukraine war, and global tariff challenges, the SIP book has surged from Rs 3,189 crore in May 2016.
The report highlights that while outstanding systematic investment plan accounts have reached 1,047 lakh, the net new SIP additions in May stood at just 2.5 lakh. Total outstanding SIP accounts have witnessed a year-on-year growth of over 15%, increasing from 906 lakh in May 2025. The month also saw 54.2 lakh new SIP registrations, slightly surpassing discontinuations and tenure completions at 51.7 lakh.
Moreover, the mutual fund industry’s assets under management by the end of May totaled Rs 81.6 lakh crore, with active equity mutual funds receiving gross inflows of Rs 57,604 crore. Net inflows from active pure equity and hybrid funds combined amounted to Rs 33,468 crore, while hybrid funds excluding arbitrage funds attracted net inflows of Rs 4,862 crore. Gross SIP registrations remain strong at 5.2% of outstanding accounts, with discontinuations catching up at 5.0%.
In May, gold ETFs experienced net outflows of Rs 725 crore, reversing the earlier trend of strong inflows, while active equity net flows reached Rs 22,908 crore. The sustained retail investor participation is evident from the SIP contributions of Rs 30,954 crore, with SIP assets totaling Rs 17.12 lakh crore.
